Building traditional Garage Doors

Gluing it all together is simple enough. Just be sure you have plenty of clamps. I found the spring clamps to be most useful. I did have to use a couple of F clamps to make sure the joints pulled tight in a couple of places. Do yourself a favor and clean up as much glue squeeze out as possible before it dries.

Remember the piece I cut wrong? Here is how I fixed it. Before I glued the grills together I dry fit them to make sure everything is correct. At that time I made a small shim that would fit tightly into the slot. I used a block plane and kept taking a little bit off the thickness till it would almost slide in. When I assembled it I took a mallet and just tapped into place. I left it over sized and trimed the sides with a chisel and sawed the top off leaving it a bit proud. Then hit it with the sander to finish the joint.

Two of the pieces I left proud because I felt it would be easier to trim them flush after they were glued together. I just used the backsaw to trim off the bulk of the excess. Then I planed them flush with the block plane. That left a really nice joint.
